Our Review

The Sony tx5 is a little pricier than most of the other cameras but worth every red cent! The Sony tx5 waterproof camera is loaded with all kinds of features and it’s very easy to figure out how to work them without referring to the manual.
It’s all touch on a large bright 3 inch view screen making it simple to select the features. There is one down side to this for surfers; I always have surf wax on my fingers so you will have it all over the touch screen.
It has very long battery life. After a three hour surf session with tons of pics, the battery indicator was at half.
This Sony tx5 will shoot 10 photos per second at a full 10 megapixels each! 10 shots per second is a little much but you can quickly adjust it to 3 or 5 shots per second as well. The tx5 is the only waterproof camera out right now that will give you its full megapixels in the continuous shooting mode while currently all the other waterproof camera models will automatically reduce them to under 3 megapixels or less.
The movie mode is exceptional as well with 720p HD widescreen quality that is bright and crisp. But like all the other waterproof camera models it still takes 2 seconds to roll after pushing the shutter. It doesn’t have its own dedicated movie mode button so you will need to select it through its settings but the touch screen makes doing that fairly quickly.
I did have a problem with the lens fogging up quite a bit, more so than on other waterproof camera models. You’ll need to keep a lot of spit on the lens or use some sort of anti-fogging solution.
The tx5 also has a cool panoramic sweep mode that will shoot a 180 degrees around you while detection people and moving objects so it's not duplicated in your shot. How this works?... well, it just does mannnn.
I highly recommend the Sony tx5 waterproof camera for any water sport. The tx5 is my first choice when I go surfing!

Check out some of my surfer shots using the Sony tx5 while surfing Southern & Central California and also Bali, Indonesia.

Surfers - Things That Matter

3 feet or 10 feet rated camera depth?
For surfing IT DOES NOT MATTER! Even in double overhead surf. My old Pentax WPi of 4 years is only rated to 3 feet and it works fine. I lone it to my friends all the time in big surf. The depths on these cameras are rated after being that deep for 2 or more hours.

Optical Zoom?
With Video
- It matters! You should only use the optical zoom with video because you can not zoom in on your computer with video... Unless you have an expensive edit program... and lots of time.
With Still Shots- It does not matter! (When in the water) You will want the widest angle possible with still pictures. The more optical zoom you use the greater chances of a blurry surfer shot and the surfer out of the frame. You can always crop and zoom in on your computer later.

Mega Pixels? It matters. When you're editing your still surfer shots you'll be amazed on how much you can zoom in and crop a surfer shot on your computer.

Weight? It matters. An addtional ounce or two does make a big difference in the feel and comfort in getting a steady surfer shot. The Olympus 1030sw is the heaviest out right now and you can definitely get clumsy when trying to hold steady.

28mm Wide Angel? It matters. It's very difficult sometimes when trying to get an instant last second shot of a surfer coming fast down the line. You'll wind up having a lot of shots with the surfer halfway out the picture. The 28mm wide angle will aliminate much of that.

HD Video? It matters. Specially when your filming a nice long wave. 640x480 will take in nice videos but when the surfer gets further away the HD will keep it clearer.
