OUR REVIEW

The Sony tx10 has a higher price tag than most of the other cameras but worth every red cent! The Sony tx10 waterproof camera is loaded with all kinds of features and it’s very easy to figure out how to work them without referring to the manual.
It’s all touch (which they need to get away from - more on that below) on a large bright 3 inch view screen making it simple to select the features.
It has very long battery life. After a three hour surf session with tons of pics, the battery indicator was at half.
This Sony tx10 will shoot 10 photos per second at a full 16 megapixels each! 10 shots per second is a little much but you can quickly adjust it to 3 or 5 shots per second as well. The Sony is the only waterproof camera out right now that will give you its full megapixels in the continuous shooting mode while currently all the other waterproof camera models will automatically reduce them to 3 megapixels or less.
The movie mode is exceptional as well with 720p HD widescreen quality that is bright and crisp. But like all the other waterproof camera models it still takes 2 seconds to roll video after pushing the shutter (with the tx10 in video mode). Unlike its tx5 predecessor it has its own dedicated movie mode button but it's pretty much worthless because the lag time is 4 seconds.
The tx10 lens doesn't seem to fog up all the time like the tx5 did but it's still a good idea spit or to use some sort of anti-fogging solution.
The tx10 also has a cool panoramic sweep mode that will shoot a 180 degrees around you while it detects people and moving objects so it's not duplicated in your shot.
Having the extra 6 mega pixels, 16mp vs. 10mp, over the tx5 is very nice to have but it seems to have slowed down the shutter speed approx a half second longer which I found very frustrating.
The 3inch touch screen is pretty slick working much like your iphone "if you're on dry land" but when you're in the water with the tx10 forget about changing to other modes. The touch screen has a problem sensing wet fingers plus another downer for surfers; I always have surf wax on my fingers so you will have it all over the touch screen too.
If you can still find the tx5 I would get it, however I do recommend the Sony tx10 over any other brand out.

Check out some of my slide show using the Sony tx10 while surfing Southern California.

3 feet or 10 feet rated camera depth?
For surfing IT DOES NOT MATTER! Even in double overhead surf. My old Pentax WPi of 4 years is only rated to 3 feet and it works fine. I lone it to my friends all the time in big surf. The depths on these cameras are rated after being that deep for 2 or more hours.
Beyond their rated depth they still don't leak, they just simply won't operate.

Shock Proof & Freeze Proof? It matters... not so much for surfing but with other action sports like dirt bike racing if your worried about wiping out or snow skiing in freezing conditions.
Using these cameras with the Surf Camera case in your action sports will greatly increase the protection!

Optical Zoom?
With Video
- It matters! You should only use the optical zoom with video because you can not zoom in on your computer with video... Unless you have an expensive edit program... and lots of time.
With Still Shots- It does not matter! (Especially in the water) You will want the widest angle possible with still pictures. The more optical zoom you use the greater chances of a blurry action sports shot and the athleteout of the frame. You can always crop and zoom in on your computer later.

Mega Pixels? It matters. When you're editing your still action sports shots you'll be amazed on how much you can zoom in and crop the action sport shot on your computer.

Weight? It matters. An addtional ounce or two does make a big difference in the feel and comfort in getting a steady action sports shot.

28mm Wide Angel? It matters. It's very difficult sometimes when trying to get an instant last second action sports shot of an athlete coming fast down the line. You'll wind up having a lot of shots with the athlete halfway out the picture. The 28mm wide angle will aliminate much of that.

HD Video? It matters. Specially when your filming a surfer on a nice long wave. 640x480 will take in nice videos but when the surfer gets further away the HD will keep it clearer.
